CUHK Researcher Honoured with Young Scientist Award
Dr. Sun Chao, postdoctoral fellow of the Department of Physics of The Chinese University, has been awarded the '2006 Hong Kong Young Scientist Award for Physical/Mathematical Science' by the Hong Kong Institution of Science (HKIS). The award was established to give recognition to young scientists demonstrating great promise in the areas of life science, engineering science, and physical/mathematical science. The aim is to enhance scientific development in Hong Kong, encourage knowledge discovery, and improve quality of life.

Together with his supervisor, Prof. Xia Keqing of the Physics Department, Dr. Sun studies the properties of convective thermal turbulence, a phenomenon occurring ubiquitously in nature. Examples of this type of turbulent flows include convective motions among stars and planets, in the earth's core and atmosphere, as well as oceans. Dr. Sun's research covers a wide range of topics including heat transport, statistics of turbulent fluctuations and flow dynamics. His work has settled several long-standing key issues in the field, such as how the turbulent velocity and temperature fields cascade from large to small scale and how turbulent flows transport heat in spatially extended systems. These results have profound implications on problems in diverse fields including atmospheric science, oceanography, geophysics, and astrophysics.

Dr. Petti Pang (Ph.D., Department of Physiology) and Dr. Liang Tak-keung (Ph.D., Department of Electronic Engineering) of CUHK were respectively winners of the life science and engineering science categories in 2005.

Dr. Zhou Chenxi and Dr. Chow Kin-kee, respectively researchers from the Epithelial Cell Biology Centre and the Department of Electronic Engineering of CUHK, received the awards in 2004.
