For three years in a row since 2002, The Chinese University of Hong Kong has been ranked number one in East Asia by business magazine Asia Inc in its ranking of MBA schools. The results were released in the September 2004 issue of the magazine.
The 2004 survey on 'Asia's Best MBA Schools' by Asia Inc studied business schools which have a full-time MBA programme. Business schools that were assessed fell into four geographical regions: East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia and Australia/New Zealand. They were rated on the basis of school and faculty quality, student quality and peer-reputation ranking. The Chinese University has again emerged as the No.1 MBA School in East Asia.
'CUHK has a large and strong student base and a wide Hong Kong and China network,' Asia Inc commented.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Lawrence J. Lau is pleased with the results, attributing the success of the University's MBA programmes to the hardwork and dedication of staff and students, and the support of the alumni and the community at large.
Prof. Lee Tien-sheng, Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration, confirmed that the MBA programmes had attracted an increasing number of non-local students. They have come from mainland China, Taiwan, South Korea, India, Malaysia, France, Germany, Spain, Holland, Canada, and the United States. Non-local students make up some 76 per cent of the 2004 student intake.
The University's MBA programmes also benefit from an extensive alumni network and close links with both local and mainland corporations. 'Prominent companies like Citicorp, Sun Hung Kai Properties Ltd, Hong Kong Monetary Authority, Standard & Poor's, Li & Fung Ltd, Hong Kong Jockey Club, Hang Seng Bank, Bank of East Asia and Caltex have offered internship opportunities for CUHK's students,' reported Asia Inc.
According to Dean Lee, northward expansion tops their current agenda. The MBA Programme in Finance offered in collaboration with Tsinghua University is in its fifth year, and student recruitment for the same programme begins in Shenzhen this month. A new EMBA Programme will also be jointly offered with Xian Jaiotung University during 2004-5.
The University's Executive MBA Programme has also consistently received top rankings. It was ranked No. 1 in Asia and 33 worldwide by the US-based magazine BusinessWeek in 2001. The Programme was also ranked the No. 1 independent programme in Asia and among the top 20 programmes worldwide by London-based Financial Times for three consecutive years from 2001 to 2003.
