7. From HelpDesk: Why Can't I Connect to the Campus Network at Student Hostels?

Have you ever experienced no Internet access with your network port in student hostel all of a sudden? If so, the following may be the reason:

  1. You have installed private Wi-Fi access point in your room, or
  2. Your computer generated abundant abnormal network traffic.

As the above behavior may cause interference in or hinder the campus network, ITSC have to suspend the function of your network port for the sake of public interest. In case you find yours being disabled, please write to ITSC Electronic HelpDesk at http://helpdesk.itsc.cuhk.edu.hk/group/resnet-help .

Nevertheless, we all can contribute to a stable network connection by taking the actions below:

For Campus Network Connection

  • Use wired LAN whenever possible
  • For Wi-Fi access, choose SSID=CUHKa if your device can detect the signal
  • DO NOT install private Wi-Fi access point

For PC Protection

  • Install an anti-virus software
  • Keep virus signatures, spyware signatures, Windows and other software patches updated
  • Enable personal firewall

For more information on the residence network, please visit http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/resnet/index.html .

We all can contribute to a stable network connection at student hostels!
