Vice-Chancellor of CUHK Attends the Forum on Research and Education Collaboration in the Greater Bay Area'

Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) visited Beijing from 11 to 12 May for the "Forum on Research and Education Collaboration in the Greater Bay Area (GBA)". Organized by the University of Macau at the Office of the Macau Special Administrative Region in Beijing, the Forum was themed "Opportunities and Challenges." Participants at the Forum included representatives from the Department of Exchange and Cooperation, Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office of the State Council; Office of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs of the Ministry of Education; Office of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs of the Ministry of Science and Technology; and the 28 member universities of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance(GHMUA).

Forum participants discussed the blueprint for the development of universities in the GBA, which includes talent-nurturing, inter-institutes collaboration, as well as innovation and entrepreneurship.  Presidents of 3 founding universities of GHMUA delivered talks at the Forum to exchange ideas and share aspirations of the joint effort. They included President Rocky S. Tuan of CUHK; President Luo Jun of Sun Yat-sen University and President Song Yonghua of the University of Macau.

Professor Tuan remarked: "As the initiating university of GHMUA in Hong Kong, CUHK has been actively engaging in education, scientific research and knowledge transfer for the collaboration. Development of the GBA is highlighted in CUHK's strategic plan of regional development and is of utmost importance. The University has formulated policies and directions responding to the needs of GBA in such significant areas as knowledge transfer, education and research. In view of the valuable opportunities and the ensuing challenges, we shall be in concerted efforts to fully utilize the complementary advantages of Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao, boosting the competitiveness and influence of tertiary education in the GBA. 

Founded in November 2016, GHMUA aspires to gather elite universities in the region, to facilitate the nurture of leaders and to foster regional collaboration.  Member institutions now include 9 universities from Hong Kong, 12 universities from Guangdong Province and 7 universities from Macau. CUHK Joins the Greater Bay Area Postgraduate Education Collaboration Meeting

Convened by the Department of Education of Guangdong Province, the Greater Bay Area (GBA) Postgraduate Education Collaboration Meeting was held on 21 May. The meeting focused on the latest development of postgraduate education towards collaboration among universities in the GBA.  Ms. Wing Wong, Director of Academic Links (China) and Ms. Iris Kam, Assistant Registrar of Graduate School Office attended the meeting on behalf The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).

Participants joining the meeting included Mr. Xing Feng, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Education of Guangdong Province; Mr. Ouyang Qian, Director of Scientific Research Office (merged with Graduate Education Department) of the Department of Education of Guangdong Province; Mr. Li Jinjun, Director of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Office of the Department of Education of Guangdong Province; as well as representatives of the member universities of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance.

Directions and ideas towards postgraduate education collaboration in the GBA were discussed. The participants also advocated to establish Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Postgraduate Education Alliance, with the aim of enhancing the quality of tertiary education in the area.  The meeting contributed to bolster linkages in postgraduate education among the universities in the GBA, which fosters future plans to cultivate research talents.
