The Department of SSPE would like to congratulate our Year 4 student, Yu Ching Yan Fiona, for recently being awarded the HKSAR Government Scholarship. She has kindly written a piece as follows:
Life Influences Life: Dreams of a Physical Education Teacher
It is my pleasure to receive the HKSAR Government Scholarship. Thank you all my Professors and Instructors from the Department of Sports Science and Physical Education for giving me such a supportive environment in equipping myself as a professional Physical Education teacher.
The four-year curriculum at CUHK broadens my horizons in sports and education. Being a teacher has always been my childhood dream and passion. Due to my sincere love for sports and teaching, I am glad to study sports science and physical education here, which equips me with a solid foundation in both theory and practice such as teaching practice in primary and secondary schools. The supportive learning environment motivates me to strive for my dream.
Physical Education is being marginalized in the primary school curriculum. However, I realize that physical education has its great value in cultivating students' personal growth. Nowadays, people mainly focus on academic achievement as a main indicator of one's success in the society, but neglect the importance of sports and exercises. Observing some of the students in schools, I have noticed that those with unsatisfactory academic results may also have low self-esteem and confidence. Other than academic pursuits, we cannot dismiss that they may have other potentials in other areas, such as sports and the arts. It is my mission to explore students' potentials through physical education by guiding their personal growth and increasing their confidence.
Besides my study field, I enjoy participating in sports-related voluntary work. It was my pleasure to join the volunteer team for the "International Conference on Childhood Obesity: Evidence and Practice from Exercise Science" held by the Department of Sports Science and Physical Education in 2008. I learned a lot from the conference as I could feast my eyes on a wide variety of international research related to our health and daily lifestyle. On top of that, the most impressive voluntary work was the East Asian Games 2009. Being a volunteer at this high level international sporting event, I shared the joy and excitement with athletes from different countries and was also influenced by their perseverance and team spirit.
The four years of my university life have been fruitful. The study in Sports Science and Physical Education and the sports-related voluntary work have motivated me to struggle for my goals by equipping myself to become a knowledgeable and skillful Physical Education teacher. I realize that being a good teacher requires not only knowledge and skills, but also a devoted heart so that students can be nurtured. Life influences life. I wish to influence students' lives through physical education.
