CUHK Students Win Top Awards at the 5th Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition
Twenty-one teams of students from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) won top awards at the 5th Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition which was held on 25 and 26 May. In particular, CUHK has swept all awards under the category of Mathematics and Physics/ Mechanics and Control Systems. The University also won the Outstanding Organization Award. The outstanding results showcased the innovation strength of the CUHK students in Science and Engineering.
The first-class award under the innovation category goes to Mr. Ren Mindan and his team members from the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering. The winning project is 'Multi-modality Digital Holography-based Two-photon Excitation Microscope', which combines a powerful DMD random-access scanner with high-speed resonant galvo-scanners to realize new functionalities that no current commercial solutions provide. The DMD scanner controls and shapes a femtosecond laser beam by sweeping through pre-stored binary holograms in the DMD. Accordingly, high speed (32.5 kHz) and high resolution (130 nm) scanning with sub-nanometer repeatability can be realized.
Mr. Zou Li and his team members from the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology and Department of Biomedical Engineering won the first-class award under the entrepreneurship category. Their winning project is 'Smart Therapeutic Device for prevention and treatment of Knee Osteoarthritis'. The project features a medical device designed for prevention and treatment of knee osteoarthritis and related degenerative diseases. With combination therapy, this device can apply to knee problems to help relieve the pain, speed up metabolism and accelerate the regeneration of tissue.
The 5th Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition was organized by the Hong Kong New Generation Cultural Association. A total of 676 students from 16 local tertiary institutions submitted a record-breaking 203 projects for the two categories of the competition, namely 'Innovation' and 'Entrepreneurship'. Winning teams may represent the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region at the biennial 'Challenge Cup' National College Students' Extracurricular Academic and Technology Contest, the China College Students' "Internet+" Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, as well as the Beijing-Hong Kong Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Cup.

CUHK Joins Hands to Organize Bilateral Visit Programme with NBU
With staunch support of Ningbo University (NBU) and Li Dak Sum Academic Exchange Fund, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) organized the Ningbo-Hong Kong Summer Student Interflow Programme (Ningbo Section) from 23 to 29 May. Staff and students of both universities paid visits to Ningbo, Hangzhou and Shaoxing, participating in a series of exploratory and learning activities.
Besides campus activities at NBU, participants from both universities visited such famous spots as Dongqian Lake, Ningbo Old Bund, Nantang Old Street, and Qiantong Ancient Town, as well as firms including Hikvision Digital Technology and Deli Group, to learn about the regional socio-economic and cultural development. Such activities also enabled students of the two universities to develop friendship and understanding about the latest development of the two cities as well.
Professor Chu Ka Hou, Programme Director of Biology Programme, School of Life Sciences is appointed Li Dak Sum Professor of 2019 by NBU, and delivered a lecture during the visit. The lecture was entitled "Fun with Constructing the Tree of Life" by tracing the evolutionary history of whales and hermit crabs and sharing his research insights. Professor Chu expressed his gratitude for the appointment and shared the previous connections with Mr. Li Dak Sum and the Faculty of Marine Sciences of NBU, with a hope to foster further collaboration initiatives between the two universities.
CUHK has initiated links with NBU since 2011 when a Memorandum of Understanding on establishing the Li Dak Sum Academic Exchange Fund for Collaboration was signed to support academic and student interflow, as well as research and training between the two universities. The visit to Ningbo this year was the first of its time to be elevated from the college to the university level, and the return visit to Hong Kong is to take place from 11 to 16 August this year.
