A team of four Quantitative Finance (QFN) students of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Kristy Choy, James Lam, Vienna Lee and Andy Yiu, beat representatives from six local universities and two mainland universities to become the champion of the University Investment Research Competition hosted by the Hong Kong Society of Financial Analysts Ltd. The other participating teams included HKU, HKUST, PolyU, BU, CityU, Lingnan, Fudan University and Shanghai Jiaotong University.
The competition, held between September to November 2006, required each participating team to conduct thorough investment research on a listed company. The CUHK Business Administration team was assigned Lenovo Group Ltd. and they had to submit a written research report and conduct a Powerpoint presentation to the judging panel within four weeks. The winning team cherished the experience. 'We visited the Lenovo Group, attended Lenovo's 2007 interim result announcement and met the Chairman, CEO and CFO of the company. The competition allowed us to apply what we learnt from our QFN programme at CUHK. We believe the quantitative skills and analytical abilities we developed in QFN gave us an edge over other teams.' Each participating team was assigned a mentor, an experienced investment analyst, who shared their experience and expertise with the team. The winning team said, 'The competition was challenging. It gave us real life experience as a research analyst. We started from scratch, and in four week's time, completed a detailed research report on the Lenovo Group which included an industry research on PC manufacturing, a company analysis of the Group and a valuation model. Another challenge was Lenovo had its interim result announcement just one week before the deadline of our report. Some of the results announced were different from what we had originally expected in our analysis. We had to revise our analysis quickly and update the valuation model within a few days. We are really grateful to our mentor, Mr. Joseph Ho, Associate Director of Daiwa Institute of Research (HK) Ltd., and our professors and classmates.'
