Social Enterprise Startup Scheme: Summary of First Term

Launched by this Centre in 2015-16, the Social Enterprise Startup Scheme has been encouraging CUHK students and recent graduates to make good use of their expertise to establish or expand their social enterprises.  The Briefing Session and Stage 1’s Training Activities of the scheme of this academic year were successfully completed.

The Briefing Session was conducted online on the 6th of last month drawing an attendance of more than 40 CUHK students and alumni.  It covered an introduction to the mentorship programme and training activities under the Social Enterprise Startup Scheme and the application procedures for CUSE Fund; and the questions raised by participants were well-thought-out.  English interpretation was arranged for non-Cantonese speakers simultaneously to facilitate their understanding of the scheme.

As for the Training Activities at Stage 1, it consisted of two online seminars held on the 22nd of last month and the 24th of this month respectively.  In the first seminar titled “How to Plan Your Business?”, Mr. Howard Ling (Chief Consultant of Social Enterprise Business Centre) related his journey of grooming numerous social enterprises over the years.  His experience has inspired participants to avoid social biases and to make use of different social enterprise models in empowering the marginalised communities.  In the second seminar titled “Innovation Process - Design Thinking”, Dr. Jeffrey Hui (Managing Director of InnoSights Limited and Founder of Dr. Phoenix Education Group) demonstrated how design thinking could aid change makers to develop people-oriented social innovations.
