Order of Ceremonial - Congregation

The Congregation for Conferment of Degrees is the most elaborate one among other graduation ceremonies nowadays.

The order of ceremonial requires the audience to stand while the Procession, consisting of staff members and guests, enters the ceremonial ground. After all of the officials are seated, the National Anthem is played. Generally speaking, the Chancellor will then declare the Congregation open and the honorary degrees, doctoral degrees, master / bachelor degrees will be conferred. In the absence of the Chancellor, the Chairman of the Council will preside. After the conferment, the audience will be asked to stand again as the Procession of about 100 people leaves the ceremonial ground.

At CUHK's first Congregation, only 7 people were in the Procession. They include the then Legco member Sir Fung Ping Fan, the then Vice Chairman of the University Council The Honorary R. C. Lee, the first Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University Dr. C. T. Yung, the then Chairman of the University Council The Honorary C. Y. Kwan, the first Vice-Chancellor of the University Dr. Choh-ming Li, the Mace Bearer Mr Liu Tsu Ru and the then Chancellor of the University Sir David Trench.
