Back in 1988, 5 poles were erected next to Tin Ka Ping Building for flying the University's flag and the flags of the 4 Colleges. The national flag and the regional flag have become 2 new additions upon Hong Kong's reunion with China. The Security Unit of the University was commissioned to fly the flags. In addition to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Establishment Day on July 1, the uniformed Security Officers will raise the national flag, regional flag and University's flag on important days such as the National Day on 1 October and the New Year's Day on 1 January. On the other hand, the flags of the University and the 4 Colleges will be raised for major University events such as University's Congregation, the Founding Days of the University and the 4 Colleges as well as University's Sports Day and Swimming Gala. Raising the national and regional flag is no trivial matter. There are strict stipulations under which the national flag or the regional flag can be displayed: when the national flag is flown together with the regional flag and the University's flag, the national flag should be at the centre with the regional flag with its left and the University's flag on its right, making sure the national flag is in a prominent position. "Left" and "right" sides are ascertained by reference to a person standing in front of the Central Steps and looking towards the main entrance of the University. The next flag raising ceremony will be held on 1 October. Check it out if you are interested in knowing more about the ceremony! Reference: CUHK Newsletter Vol. 8.19 No. 118 |
