6. Best Practice for Accessing Campus Network at Student Hostels

Many hostel residents choose to use wifi instead of a ResNet connection to surf the web because of the high mobility feature of wifi service. In fact, wifi is provided as an alternative in student hostels and it is always recommended to use a ResNet connection through the LAN port provided in your hostel for a speedier and more stable connection.

Here are some tips for a smooth and fast web surfing at student hostels:
1. Use a wired ResNet connection whenever possible
2. Use SSID=CUHKa if your mobile device can detect this wifi signal
3. Do not install your own wifi access point (AP) as it will cause interference to the official wifi service and bring disturbance to other users. It is also against our use policy that setting up routing or other special network functions in hostel network is prohibited (http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/about/wlan_policy.html
4. Avoid areas where wifi is over-utilized
5. Mind possible interference and obstacles (such as nearby microwave ovens and Bluetooth devices, etc.)
6. Check the nearby wifi signals

The Central Wifi Services only broadcast the following signals:
SSID=CUHKa, CUHK, CUguest, eduroam, PCCW, Y5ZONE, Universities WiFi
If you have detected other unknown signals, please report it to ITSC by specifying your hostel, room number and capturing a screen with detected signals like below:

As always, if you have problems in using the student hostel network services (ResNet or wifi), please write to ITSC Electronic HelpDesk or call us at 394 38845 during office hours.

Use a wired ResNet connection whenever possible.
