I·CARE’s Warmth Giving - A Day for Foreign Domestic Helpers

There were media reporting in early last month that the city’s some 400,000 domestic helpers have not been well informed of the updated precautionary measures under the COVID-19 pandemic.  Many of them are also short of personal protective equipment.  In this circumstances, they will easily get infected when spending their weekly day off in the form of outdoor gatherings on a mass scale.  Given the close contact with their serving families, transmission of the virus within the community is on the verge of explosion.  As such, this Centre gathered the CUHK students to conduct an onsite inspection in the Central district so as to observe the congregation of the foreign domestic helpers, and decided afterwards that the I·CARE’s Warmth Giving - A Day for Foreign Domestic Helpers would be held on the 22nd of last month.

On the event day, 10 students who constantly take part in I·CARE Programme visited one of the popular gathering places for foreign domestic helpers namely Victoria Park to give away surgical masks ordered by this Centre and cookies boxes donated by “ISABELLE” to the workers.  They also disseminated practical information on how to prevent the spread of the coronavirus making reference to the advice of the Centre for Health Protection.  As a token of care, the students briefly communicated with the foreign domestic helpers to understand their living conditions in Hong Kong and the difficulties that they had encountered.

The I·CARE’s Warmth Giving - A Day for Foreign Domestic Helpers served more than 230 foreign domestic helpers.  700 pieces of masks and over 70 boxes of “ISABELLE” cookies were dispatched.  To sustain the effort of “warmth giving”, this Centre will keep on securing various protective gear to pair up with the remaining cookies (about 220 boxes) for distribution to the needy people in the community.
