Party Secretary of Tsinghua University Visits CUHK

 

A five-member delegation from Tsinghua University, led by Prof. CHEN Xu, Party Secretary and Prof. YANG Bin, Vice-President, visited the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on October 3.  Meetings were held with Prof. Joseph SUNG, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK and Prof. Isabella POON, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, etc. to know about the latest development of the University and to discuss ways to enhance collaboration in different areas.

 

Representatives of the two universities discussed current collaborative projects and explored future opportunities including innovation and entrepreneurship programme, research projects in mathematics, life sciences and medicine, as well as student interflow activities.  The delegates also visited S.H. Ho College, where they met and learnt about the operation of the University's college system with Prof. Samuel SUN, College Master and Prof. WONG Wing-shing, Chairman of the College Committee of Student Exchange.

 

Tsinghua University is one of the major key partners of CUHK.  Since the establishment of partnership in 1995, both universities have been in close collaboration ranging from research to student exchange.  Prof. Joseph SUNG, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, was appointed Honorary Professor of Tsinghua University in 2015.  This visit enhanced the communication between the two universities to maintain partnership development, whilst broading the scope of and potential for further collaboration.

President of Academia Sinica Visits CUHK and Renews Collaboration Agreement

 

Prof. James C. LIAO, President of Academia Sinica (AS), visited the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on October 4.  During his visit, Prof. LIAO met with Prof. Joseph SUNG, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK to discuss future collaboration opportunities between the two institutions, and made an advance in collaboration by renewing the collaboration agreement with CUHK.

 

During the meeting, Prof. LIAO and Prof. SUNG expressed their hope of encouraging exchange between Hong Kong and Taiwan research talents (including postgraduate students and post-doctoral fellows) via unique schemes and programmes in the two regions.  Both sides would like to enhance the collaboration and standard of scientific research in such fields as life sciences and medicine.

 

On October 5, Prof. LIAO delivered a presentation entitled "Metabolic Engineering of Bacteria for C1 Metabolism" at the symposium organized by the School of Life Sciences in CUHK.  He was also introduced to a group of local and overseas scholars during the event, and had active discussions with them on various academic topics.  CUHK faculty members joining the meeting included Prof. Henry WONG, Faculty Dean of Science; Prof. Michael CHAN and Prof. Jack WONG from School of Life Sciences.

 

CUHK has established formal collaboration relations with AS since 2010, in particular on humanities and social sciences.  Seven professors of the University are awarded academicians of AS, including four former Vice-Chancellors.  This is also Prof. LIAO's visit to CUHK after being appointed the 11th President of AS in June this year.  The visit strengthened the ties between the two parties, fostering further partnership development.

Members of Tertiary Education Services Office of Macao SAR Visit CUHK

 

A 23-member delegation led by Ms. Io Iok Fong, Functional Head of Group of Higher Education Institutions Coordination, Tertiary Education Services Office of Macao SAR visited the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on 12 October.  The delegation met with Prof. Wu Weiping, Director of Yale-China Chinese Language Centre (YCCLC), Prof. Cecillia Chun, Director of Centre for Learning Enhancement and Research (CLEAR) and Ms. Wing Wong, Director of Academic Links (China), to understand the latest research and teaching development of CUHK.

 

Representatives from the Tertiary Education Services Office of Macao SAR included scholars and executives from University of Macau, Macau University of Science and Technology, Macao Polytechnic Institute, City University of Macau, University of Saint Joseph, Macau Security Forces Training College, Macau Institute of Management, Institute of Tourism Studies and Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau.  The delegates and CUHK members shared their experience of teaching Cantonese and Mandarin to international students, as well as the latest development of e-learning during the meetings.  The delegation then visited YCCLC and CLEAR to tour around the corresponding teaching facilities.  The visit provided an opportunity to enhance understanding and establish links for further collaboration between the University and institutes in Macao.
