CUHK Client Certificate Service Terminated by 2017

ITSC has been issuing digital certificate to staff and students for years. It was commonly used for secured access to CUHK internal applications and email encryption.

With the rise of cloud collaboration and other security measures, the use of CUHK Client Certificate has been significantly dropped. As of January 2017, there were around 200 users in CUHK using the certificate.

We will terminate the CUHK Client Certificate service on 31 December 2017 for a better resources allocation.

Reminder

  • Existing users should keep your current and previous certificates to read the old encrypted emails

If you want to encrypt your email message, you can

  • Use the built-in password encryption functions in Microsoft Office to protect files
  • Apply for a paid client certificate from an external certificate authority e.g. Hong Kong Post eCert for individuals at HK$50 / cert annually
  • Register for a free email certificate from an external certificate authority e.g. Comodo

ITSC is now studying cloud-based information protection software for email encryption. We will show you more in coming months. Stay tuned!
