4. Upgrade of CUHK Financial System (SAP)

The CUHK Financial System is running on SAP which is an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. In Nov 2011, the system has undergone a major upgrade from R/3 Enterprise 4.7 to Enterprise 6.0. The upgrade was performed upon expiration of maintenance support of the previous release, which had been used for 7 years.

The upgrade brings a number of benefits including,

  • mainstream maintenance support service available
  • improved performance of new servers gives capacity for future growth
  • improved system availability:
    • disaster recovery duration shortened from 1 day to an hour
    • maximum data loss shortened from 1 day to a few minutes
  •  the system can be further developed with new features explored by ITSC staff, e.g.
    • single sign-on
    • connectivity to LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) without the need to maintain another set of accounts and passwords
  • Accessible via web browser
    •  Easier to deploy, no need to perform software installation on users' desktop computers
