The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) – Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health (GIBH), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Joint Research Laboratory on Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine was officially inaugurated on 24 August 2012.

| 3rd Visit of the Scientific Advisory Committee | |
The Scientific Advisory Committee comprising of Dr. Owen M. Rennert (Chairperson), National Institutes of Health, U.S.A., Dr. Law Ping-Yee, University of Minnesota, U.S.A., Dr. Vassilios Papadopoulos, McGill University Health Centre, Canada, and Dr. Rocky S. Tuan, University of Pittsburg School of Medicine, U.S.A. paid their third visit to our School between 27 and 31 August 2012.

| Opening Ceremony of the Lo Kwee-Seong Integrated Biomedical Sciences Building | |
Following the Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony held in September 2010, the Grand Opening of the Lo Kwee-Seong Integrated Biomedical Sciences Building was successfully held on 29 August 2012 under the coordination of the Communications and Public Relations Office and the Office of Institutional Advancement, together with the joint efforts of the School of Biomedical Sciences.

| SBS Research Day 2012 cum Cancer and Inflammation 2012 Symposium | |
Officiated by Prof. Fok Tai-fai, Dean of Medicine and Prof. Chan Wai-yee, the third School of Biomedical Sciences Research Day in conjunction with a Cancer and Inflammation 2012 Symposium were held on 4 and 5 June 2012. The event was well attended by more than 250 participants including those from the School, thematic Associate Members from clinical departments and also guests from the University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Baptist University.

The Executive Committee of the School of Biomedical Sciences Postgraduate Student Association successfully organized the first Badminton Tournament at the Thomas H.C. Cheung Gymnasium, United College on 26 May 2012.

The Hong Kong-Taiwan Physiology Symposium 2012 and the Joint Scientific Meeting of Hong Kong Society of Neurosciences & The Biophysical Society of Hong Kong were held at the Lo Kwee-Seong Integrated Biomedical Sciences Building, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) between 14 and 15 June 2012.

| Information Sessions for New Postgraduate Students | |
To enable newly admitted research postgraduate students to know more about the different research projects being undertaken within the School before they can choose their thesis topics according to their interests and capabilities, the Graduate Division of Biomedical Sciences organized two information sessions on 7 and 8 August 2012 during which our teaching staff members were invited to give an oral introduction of their research projects to all new students.

Following the last delegation visit on 16 Feb 2012, a delegation comprising 30 academics and administrative staff from Khon Kaen University (KKU), Thailand visited the School of Biomedical Sciences again on 29 May 2012 to have in-depth discussion of potential collaborations between the two institutions.

Led by Prof. Joseph J.Y. Sung, Vice-Chancellor and President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and coordinated by the Office of Academic Links (China), a 10-member delegation comprising Prof. Jack C.Y. Cheng, Pro-Vice-Chancellor; Prof. Chan Wai-Yee, SBS Director; Prof. Fung Kwok-Pui and Prof. Yung Wing-Ho as well as representatives of various units of the University visited Yunnan on 4 and 5 June 2012 to strengthen academic collaborations with the partner institutions there. |

| Visit of the Health Department of Guangdong Province | |
Following the last CUHK delegation visit on 9 March 2012, a 6-member delegation led by Dr. Geng Qingshan, Deputy Director-General of the Health Department of Guangdong Province visited the University and its various academic units (including the School of Biomedical Sciences) on 20 August 2012 to explore opportunities for further academic collaborations.

| Retirement and reappointment of teaching staff | |
Following their official retirements on 31 July 2012, Prof. T.B. Ng and Prof. Michael S.C. Tam have been re-appointed as Research Professor and Adjunct Professor at the School of Biomedical Sciences respectively effective from 1 August 2012.
