Celebrating Our 10th Anniversary!

Time flies. S.H. Ho College has rooted in the soil of CUHK for a decade. The College's distinctive identity was fostered through its members' assiduous cultivation, and unique educational programmes made on various fronts. As it continues to grow, the College has anchored firmly in its collegiate system, 'full residence and communal dining' culture, and whole-person education. We nurtured the first batch of graduates in 2013 and established our alumni association in August 2016. Maintaining their ties with the family, alumni can continue to participate in the College's high table dinners and attend the homecoming dinner on CUHK Homecoming Day to reunite with SHHO big family and foster generations of camaraderie.

Establishment-cum-Inauguration Ceremony of SHHO Alumni Association

On 27 August, S.H. Ho College was filled with the joyous and festive spirit of its home-coming alumni. Supportive and passionate SHHO alumni of years 2013 to 2016 came back to the College that Saturday to meet old friends and gather for a great purpose: to witness the Establishment-cum-Inauguration Ceremony of the S.H. Ho College Alumni Association (SHHAA). Members of the University, representatives of other CUHK alumni associations and the College staff joined in their excitement.

A Consignment Shop @ SHHO Campus

S.H. Ho College has strived to motivate students to pursue innovation and benefit the society with their innovative ideas. In 2014, the College first launched the 'Young Entrepreneur Programme' to encourage students and alumni to turn their innovative and entrepreneurial ideas into reality. It is expected that the programme will help young entrepreneurs acquire essential skills in running a business and widen their business network. The winning entrepreneurial projects in the first two years of the programme were 'Timing Bookstore' and 'HeyHome' respectively. The former is an independent second-hand bookstore which differentiates itself from other mainstream bookstores in the way it operates, with the aim of enriching students' reading experience. The latter project, HeyHome, is a food shop selling basically organic vegetarian food ingredients. They were given a 300 square feet indoor space on the ground floor of Chan Chun Ha Hall to run their entrepreneurial projects.

2016 Student Orientation Camp
The College freshmen participated in a 4-day Orientation Camp from 30 August to 2 September. The Orientation Camp is a College programme designed to help freshmen adjust to the College life and University life. An array of activities, including Matriculation, communal dining, mass games, an introduction to hostel life and College General Education programme, are held in the camp to help students interact with each other and with College members, and immerse themselves in the College's 'full residence and communal dining'.

Painting Dunhuang

When we speak of 'Dunhuang', we will naturally call to mind the well-known Dunhuang grottoes like the Mogao Caves (also known as the Thousand Buddha Grottoes) and the amazing frescoes inside the caves. 12 SHHO students, led by the Chinese painting master Prof. Ng Yuet-lau, the instructors of the Ling Ngai Art Association and the College staff, were lucky enough to visit this famous travel attraction, previously a bustling city on the Silk Road and currently a 'National Historical and Cultural City' designated by the Chinese government. They also brought with them painting tools and sketchbooks, and immersed themselves in ink drawing before undulating mountains and beside a gurgling river, which is rarely found in the desert area, allowing themselves to follow their hearts in the process.

Discovering the Indigenous Aloha Spirit
Hawaii, popularly known as the 'Paradise of the Pacific', constantly brings up images of warm tropical climate, gentle breezes, beautiful soft-sand beaches and glimmering seawater, scenic volcanoes, hula dance and passionate local people wearing lovely flowery leis. And yet, to Hawaiians and perhaps those who have taken a more in-depth exploration of this archipelago, it is far more than a summation of the general impressions that one may immediately recall. 19 students from S.H. Ho College, together with Prof. Samuel Sun, Master of the College, embarked on a fascinating, eye-opening journey on 26 May 2016 to explore Oahu and the Big Island, two of the eight main islands at the southeastern end of the Hawaiian archipelago. To them, Hawaii turned out to be essentially a cultural melting pot of great historical, ethnical and geographic interests.

A Glimpse of Tang Porcelain Culture
The College is presenting the exhibition 'Treasures from Tang Dynasty—Prof. Kai Keung Mark's Collection of Chinaware from Changsha Kiln' until 3 October 2016. The exhibition showcases Prof. Kai Keung Mark's collection of Tang dynasty chinaware, mainly from the Changsha Kiln, gathered during the early 1990s. It includes over 80 exhibits of various wine pots, bowls, plates, vases and bibelots.

Bringing the Torch of Love to Vietnam
To foster students' positive attitude and sense of civic responsibility, S.H. Ho College has been organizing a variety of social service programmes to encourage students to serve the needy in the society. In addition to visiting an elderly home in Hong Kong and providing teaching support to secondary school students through the SHHO Student Social Service Mentorship Programme, we also coordinate, together with overseas welfare organizations, service trips outside Hong Kong. From 2011 to 2015, our students had offered their caring service in Uganda, Cambodia, Yunnan and Wenchuan. In May 2016, they brought their 'torch of love' to Vietnam, bestowing warmth and happiness to the children of a blind school in Ho Chi Minh City.
